The quarrying industry is proud of its excellent international reputation for restoring sites to a high standard and often for recreational purposes. Over one third of the SSSIs (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) nationally are old quarry sites. BAA maintains the highest regard for environmental matters and operates a Restoration Guarantee Fund similar to the SAGA scheme which we launched in October 2002.
BAA have been asked to assist with yet another ALSF project promoting the importance of aggregate sites for invertebrate biodiversity. The potential is there for lower cost restoration – and members who would like to learn more or participate please contact: Peter Huxtable.
Dairy Farm Pit shared the Cooper Heyman Cup as the premier Sand and Gravel Association Restoration Award winner for 1990. The beauty of Moreton C Cullimore’s gravel restoration at Ashton Keynes in Wiltshire was captured in Jack Russels’s painting.
